| Thassos - latest news and information |
| 05/07/2010 |
I have received regular reports of sitings of pods of Dolphins in the waters around the island. They have been seen both from the shore and from the Eros II pleasure boat. Many of the reports confirm that the pods have been swimming close in to the shoreline. |

On page 98 of the Thassos book, I refer to a small blue sign with a foot on it as a pointer to Metallia beach. This has now been replaced by a green sign saying 'Apothikes Metallion'. |

I am pleased to announce that the vastly enlarged archaeological museum in Thassos Town is now open 7 days a week. I recommend a visit to the museum for anyone interested in ancient history. This means that with the new museum and the excellent 'HistoryShots' multimedia shows, visitors will have two quality venues to learn about the amazing ancient history of Thassos.
The museum opening times Tuesday to Sunday are 8.00am to 8.00pm, Monday 1.00pm to 8.00pm. |

For 2010, 'HistoryShots’ will be presenting superb multimedia shows telling the remarkable story of ancient Thassos, known in antiquity as 'The Athens of the North'. The show's venue for the full season is the historic Kalogeriko building in the 'Old Harbour' Thassos Town. As in 2009, there will be two shows a week on Tuesday and Friday night at 7:00 pm. The shows are presented in full multimedia and include interactive displays of ancient artifacts, museum accurate sets of full 5th century B.C. Greek and Persian weapons and armour, an introduction to the archaeology on the island and much more. Audience feedback this season has been excellent, so we recommend the show. |

For those planning their own trip to the island, we are sorry to announce that the Blue Air route from Stansted to Thessalonika has been withdrawn by the airline. This leaves only Easyjet and BA flying from Gatwick (UK) into Thessalonika and Thomson 'flight only' into Kavala. |

Occasionally I have been asked why there are no photographs in the printed version of the book? When I first set out to write my travel guides, the two prime objectives were to publish books at an affordable price and to make sure they were accurate and with the latest information (initial research had shown that the vast majority of guide books contain numerous errors and omissions). To achieve this, the publication process I chose was POD (Print on Demand), whereby each book is printed at the time of order, from a manuscript that is regularly updated (larger retailers such as Amazon do hold small stocks). However, one drawback of POD is that the addition of colour photographs would add considerably to the cost of each book.
As is the practice with books containing photographs, if they are to be offered at a reasonable price, they are printed in bulk to reduce the unit cost. This inevitably means that at these quantities, the book can be significantly out of date when purchased. I hope you therefore agree that my decision to sacrifice the addition of photographs so as to ensure the accuracy of information on the island was the correct one.

Whilst I stand by my decision to be impartial and unbiased in my guide book with regard to accommodation on Kos, I have received a number of emails asking me to mention the Kos Imperial Thalasso hotel at Psalidi. They have all commented on the exceptional quality of service, food and facilities. They have also praised its location, offering easy access to Kos Town. |

I am pleased to confirm that Monarch Airlines now offer flights direct to Santorini from Gatwick and Manchester airports in the UK. The service will be available up to the 5th October. |

We are saddened to confirm that for the third year our Santorini book has been attacked on Amazon by malicious reviewers. The revues they post contain both factually incorrect and distorted information. Previously we have been advised that these have been posted by another publisher of guide books, a situation that has been experienced by other authors (Google with 'malicious reviews on Amazon'). We have asked Amazon to investigate, but hope that those who have found our books useful will help by posting positive reviews to counteract these unwarranted attacks. |

If you fancy a change from Greek food during your stay, there is a Chinese and a Mexican restaurant on the island. The 'China Restaurant' is near to the cable car in Fira town, offering either eat in or a 'take away' services. The Mexican restaurant 'Senor Zorbas' is about 3km outside Fira on the road to Megalochori. These are the only restaurants of their type on Santorini and both are of high quality, therefore I am happy to mention them. |

Due to a serious accident at the archaeological site of Akrotiri in 2005, the site has been closed to the public. The authorities are not sure when it will re-open, I will post a note as soon as I know more. |
